The installation “Political Colateral” by the Colombian artist David Fernando Torres Forero. Striking, garishly colorful, we face a cultural site reminiscent in form of Ionic columns from antiquity. That David chose the Ionic column in particular may not be a coincidence, since the name Ionic order is derived from the Ionians — an older Greek ethnic group who were displaced from their original settlement area by the Dorians. At the center of his artistic interest are terms such as tradition, decolonization, and idiosyncrasy. David uses the corn kernel, popcorn, as an image. A staple food in his homeland and a symbol for political, economic, and cultural concerns. David leads us to question the pillars of democracy, which in this case carry popcorn.
